The Law on Basic Principles and Requirements for Organic Production was adopted

Today, July 10, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Law of Ukraine No. 5448-d "On Basic Principles and Requirements for Organic Production, Turnover and Marking of Organic Products". The law establishes the general principles of legal regulation in the field of organic production, circulation and labeling of organic products. 237 people`s deputies of Ukraine voted for the relevant bill. "The adoption of the "organic"Law will give an impetus to the sustainable development of organic production in Ukraine, increase the competitiveness of organic products and expand the external markets for its sale. In addition, this Law is important for harmonizing the national legislation with the European requirements in the field of organic production", - the Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine on European Integration Olga Trofimtseva commented on the decision of the Parliament. The specified Law of Ukraine introduces a clear and transparent system of registration of certification bodies, market operators and organic seeds, determines the mechanism of state control (supervision) of activities of subjects of the organic products market and establishes their responsibility for violation of the legislation in this area. Along with this, the procedures for certification of organic production and circulation of organic products are regulated, and requirements are set for certification bodies and their functions. The law will come into force six months after its publication. Reference: According to FiBL and IFOAM (World Agriculture, Statistics and Trends 2018), in 2016 there were 294 farms receiving organic status, and the total area of agricultural land cultivated in compliance with the principles of organic production was 381 , 2 thousand hectares (0.9% of the total agricultural land area of Ukraine), of which 91.6 thousand hectares were in transition. In Ukraine, 550 thousand hectares of wild animals are also certified. Almost half of the agricultural lands of Ukraine, certified as organic, are engaged in growing of cereals (45.4%). More than 18% of such lands were oil and 5.3% legumes, vegetables - 1.6% and fruit - 0.7%.
